Mahesh Aitha

I am excited to introduce myself as a first-generation graduate, Scientist, STEM enthusiast, and an active community leader, with a vision for positioning Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) as a model school system in Maryland.
I come from a family that prioritized the value of higher education despite several financial hurdles. I graduated from a public school system in India and navigated my way, as an immigrant, to complete Masters and doctoral degrees in the US, to currently serving as a Research Scientist for a health care research institution. My global experience on the breath and depth of diverse education systems has shaped my belief in the transformative power of education.

The dream that I had as a kid, aspiring to make a meaningful contribution to my society through education, is providing me the drive to run for the board to advocate for student needs and ensure that they have the resources to succeed academically and emerge as citizen leaders. I am deeply committed to ensuring EVERY student receives equitable access to quality education. I and my wife, Sravani, who works as a Senior Accountant for a biotech firm, have a 3-year-old kid, who attends FCPS PreK-3 program. We resonate the perspectives of young parents who are looking up to the FCPS system to raise their children. With strong support from the community members, I am stepping up with lots of enthusiasm to be their voice and be part of a forward-looking education system. My family is blessed with a happy and healthy life, and I look forward to sharing the happiness and serving the community that has now become our extended family.

Leadership Experiences

I bring in diverse leadership experiences that has given me (1) the ability to lead and inspire others toward a common vision of community welfare; (2) strong decision-making skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues, weigh diverse perspectives, and make informed choices in the best interest of the community; (3) capacity to collaborate effectively with fellow board members, listen to diverse perspectives, facilitate productive discussions, and find common ground to move initiatives forward. Here are some of my key leadership experiences through my voluntary contributions to the community:

Treasurer and Member of the Board of Directors of Landsdale Homeowners Association
– In this elected role, I worked collaboratively with fellow board members, Management Company, association committees and fellow residents to uplift our association in all aspects. As a team, we made a huge impact on the association’s finances, changing it from negative to surplus budget, within two years. This is a representative of my data-informed decision making and appropriation of funds.

Some of the key accomplishments in this role, in collaboration with the fellow members:

  • Review all existing contracts to bring better services for lower costs.
  •  Improvement in the technology and communication tools.
  • Transparency in all HOA operations by encouraging more resident involvement.
  • Streamlining the architectural applications, payment methods, pool use and service request processes.

Chair of Landsdale Finance Committee – In this role, I was instrumental in making recommendations to the board on secure investment options for our Capital Reserves Money to earn the interest.
Treasurer and Member of Landsdale Social Committee – In this role, I advocated for diverse cultural activities that will help build a sense of belonging to the community members and will expose the kids to diverse cultures. This helped the community, in particular, the kids to develop an appreciation for all cultures.
Coordinator for Penn State Postdoctoral Society (PSPS) – During my post-doctoral research at Penn State University, I advocated to implement ‘Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA)’ to increase the minimum wages for postdocs.

Non-Profit Language School

Several studies have reported the cognitive advantages in children speaking multiple languages. As a strong believer of this, I initiated collaborations with the University of Silicon Andhra to set up a non-profit language school in Frederick County. Currently, the school has 15 teacher volunteers serving around 70 students. The school meets every Saturday morning at Sugarloaf Elementary School to empower the language skills at different levels, [starting from Pre-K to 8 grades]. I continue to work closely with the teachers, students, parents, FCPS and University of Silicon Andhra not just to manage the day-to-day operations, but also create a vision and path for their future.

Community Services

I have been actively volunteering in various programs to mentor and support students in exploring their interests, setting goals, internship programs, science projects, and accessing resources to pursue post-secondary education and career pathways. Some of the organizations that I am currently part of are:
  • Ekal Foundations educational and community service programs
  • Urbana STEM Robotics program, food drives, blood donation drives, battery recycle program, community cleaning program.
  • VT SEVA Maryland chapter
  • NRIVA Maryland chapter
In addition, I am an active volunteer with a local religious organization, SBAT Maryland, in supporting their fundraising events. Through all these community services, my genuine desire is to share my experiences with the community and actively learn from the community members in this process.
